Tiny Dog Breeds
So you are thinking of buying a tiny dog because they are cute, adorable and cuddly. If this is the sole basis of your decision when shopping, you might want to rethink your pre-conceived notions of dog ownership. Owning a dog comes with its own set of responsibilities but tiny dog breeds are in a league all their own. Just like people, tiny dogs have unique personalities, characteristics and care. Therefore, before taking that leap of faith, you might want to be more educated on which tiny dog would be best for you and/or your family
Below is a list of the more popular small and tiny breeds and some information to help you along in making this very important decision.
1. Pomeranian
The Pomeranian is an adorable, gentle and mellow dog but can get noisy at times (like children). This breed is great if you have kids at home as long as you introduce the dog when it is still a puppy. Families with very small children may want to look elsewhere as they tend to shed profusely which can be an issue as far as allergies. This dog is trainable but requires a firm owner. It is an ideal dog for former cat owners who have been wanting to own a dog as they do tend to get along well with their feline counterpart. (Adult weight: 3-7 pounds, Adult height: 8-11 inches)
2. Chihuahua
A Doberman brain in a tiny body, the Chihuahua has an enormous following and requires lots of love. This breed needss little exercise, minimal grooming and a warm spot in your lap and your home. It can be demanding and loud at times but is loyal and affectionate as well and is also known to get along with cats if introduced to them over time. (Adult weight: maximum 6 pounds, Adult height: 6-9 inches)
3. Boston Terrier
Small, not tiny, the Bost Terrier is great family dog. This breed bonds well with and does not require a lot of grooming so if you run a busy household this may be a plus. A lot of chew toys are recommended as this dog loves to munch on household items so "dog proofing" your home is a must if you do not want to end up with problems. (Adult weight: 10-25 pounds, Adult height: 15-17 inches)
4. Jack Russell Terrier
A personal favorite, the Jack Russell Terrier is an active breed (some may even say hyper). A small dog but not in the tiny category, they love to jump on furniture, run around the house and lead general overall happy existences. If you are looking for a quiet dog that likes to loung around, this breed may not be the right choice for you. But if you are looking for a lot of love, then this breed comes with my highest recommendation. (Adult weight: 14-18 pounds, Adult height: 10-15 inches)
5. Maltese
Intelligent and lively, the Maltese is not a big shedder so is most suitable for those with allergies. Bred as a companion, this breed does not like being alone so it is recommended for those who already own another dog or has a family member that is home more than they are away. Does take a little more effort with grooming due to its white coat but if you are willing to make the effort, it is a great dog. (Adult weight: 4-7 pounds, Adult height: 5-8 inches)
6. Shih Tzu
Affectionate and playful this tiny dog is a great choice for condo/apartment dwellers. It does not shed but may require daily grooming. Also known as the "mini lion" because of its beautiful long coat, the Shih Tzu gets along with all creatures (including children) and is a good family dog. (Adult weight: 9-16 pounds, Adult height: 8-11 inches)
7. Chinese Crested
You will love this breed if you believe pretty is as pretty does. You may be startled at its first look but it is a perfect dog for the people who want a constant companion. If you want attention this is the dog for you. It comes in hairless and powder puff varieties. (Adult weight: 5-10 pounds, Adult height: 11-13 inches)
8. Dachshund
Also known as the "weiner dog", because of their long, narrow build, the Dachshund makes an excellent watch dog. It can be aggressive around children at times but conversely becomes very attached to the owner and the family. It is very fond of hunting, digging, tracking by scent and chasing games. (Adult weight: (mini) under 11 pounds, Adult height: 10-15 inches)
9. Pekingese
The Pekingese is also a great watchdog with a fiercely independent nature which makes it very suitable for owners who work. A little difficult to train, this breed is perfect for apartment and condo dwellers. It is a tiny dog but not as light weight as some toy dog breeds. (Adult weight: 8-14 pounds, Adult height: 8-9 inches)
10. Skye Terrier
The Skye Terrier is a small low set dog with a long flowing coat. It is an extremely dependable dog and gets along well with people. Not a good choice for cat owners as it dislikes those of the feline persuasion but makes a great family pet otherwise. (Adult weight: 35-45 pounds, Adult height: about 10 inches)
Tiny dog breeds come in many shapes and sizes but regardless of which breed you ultimately decide to bring home, you can be guaranteed one thing: Years and years of hugs, cuddles and unconditional love.
